Son-in-law got a somewhat similar ransomware infection affectionately known as "Kitty" even though antivirus software was installed and up to date. I have just finished rebuilding the software on the machine from Win7 upwards as Kitty kept "purring" even after a number of attempts to get rid of it from the system. Fortunately no data loss through encrypted files, just a lot of time involved rebuilding the software from scratch. Needless to say that KB4012212 was definitely installed separately after the rebuild.
