Is anyone using a USB hub, powered or unpowered? Do they have any disadvantages?
I am considering using one with a used laptop I have my eye on. It will be replacing an old XP powered one that has 4 ports which are just enough. Unfortunately the replacement laptop has only 3 USB ports but I need at least 4.
I will be using the ports to connect to my rigs and Signallink etc.

Nev,
I'm using a cheep one from Ebay with no problems, depending on what is connected you may need external power.
It is also handy to get one with individual switches if you want to be able to isolate each USB outlet, ie my speakers power.

Beware of getting a noisy plugpack with it & if you need to provide external power to the hub. Some of them are "really good" sources of broadband hash - being switch mode with no EMI filtering.
Thanks Michael and Doug,
I will get an unpowered one and see how we go. I don't want hash!
The power requirements of what I connect at the moment are minute, so should be OK.
