Future assessments - WIA or other ?? |

From https://www.acma.gov.au/Home/Citizen/TV-...-licensing
"On 28 January 2009, the ACMA contracted the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) to issue amateur certificates of proficiency and manage amateur callsigns, in addition to the provision of amateur examinations. The WIA provides these services to the amateur community as the ACMA's authorised delegate.
The WIA also issues callsign recommendations to amateurs wishing to be issued an amateur licence. This includes amateurs who wish to vary their licences (where there is a change in callsign)."
That 28 January 2009 + 10 years = 27 January 2019, and that date is drawing close now.
I had my WIA Assessor's hat on a couple of days ago and was discussing a Standard to Advanced upgrade (i.e doing the Advanced theory paper) with a local. No problems, give me a call.
Today it struck me that unless that if it is attempted ( successfully of course) and all the paperwork done by the WIA, then submitted to the ACMA before the Deed expires, it might be ok. Later that that date, it may not be recognised.
Does anyone have any updates on whether the WIA is likely to continue their current role in examinations and callsign management ?? Do we hold off on conducting further assessments until more is known ??

This was hinted at some months ago..
As from 1st January 2019, the Forum will require all 'guests' to log in before they will be able to view threads.
This means that..
Previously-registered users will need to actually log in - passwords can be reset if you haven't saved them;
-or-
Registration as a new user will be required and, following manual activation by a Forum admin or moderator, will need to log in to view threads.
All user profiles are based on amateur callsigns and duplicates are not allowed.
Where prospective users are not current holders of a callsign then a pseudo-call will be allocated by admin support.
Email to webmaster @ ahrdf . net if difficulties are encountered.

Yaesu FT-857D display |

Greetings
There has been much discussion in the Hamdon about the display in the FT-857D, and the 'zebra line effect'.
Some have claimed to have a fix, with reasonable/mediocre results. the only real fix is to replace the display.
To all the faint hearted out there who say "it is too complicated, and I couldn't do it", take heart I have done it and so can you.
The only equipment required is a replacement display from Yaesu (this is the part that hurts), 2 screwdrivers and your soldering iron to unsolder and resolder
4 pins.
There are 2 connectors to disconnect, remove the display board, unsolder the volume/rf gain pins, drop in the new board, resolder the pins, reconnect the previous 2 connectors. Job done. Enjoy your 'new' FT-857 without squinting.
Posted in the interest of allaying any fears.

Amateur Radio on air for 2000 Scouts at AJ2019
We want you in the log this January
Between 4-14 January 2019, 8400 Scouts from every Australian state plus representatives from 18 nations will converge in Tailem Bend in South Australia to participate in the 25th Australian Scout Jamboree - AJ2019.
One of the 150 activities on offer to the Scouts will be a chance to participate in Amateur Radio. To facilitate this activity, we will establish a showcase station under the special event call sign VI25AJ and a Direction Finding course. We are expecting 2000 Scouts to experience amateur radio over the 10 day period.
We’d love to see as many amateur radio enthusiasts giving us a call during the Jamboree period to help give the kids an amazing experience – and perhaps take up the hobby on their return home.
We will be active on the HF bands both SSB and digital modes, Satellites, IRLP and Echolink. Full details such as operating schedules, frequencies will be available via our VI25AJ QRZ.COM page.
Once formal activities have finished for the day the showcase station will be available for licensed amateurs to use and if you happen to be attending AJ2019 bring your HT, we will have an IRLP linked repeater onsite.
For further information please contact:
Brett Nicholas - National Coordinator JOTA/JOTI
AJ2019 Activity Manager - Radio Scouting
Scouts Australia
jota.joti at scouts.com.au
I will be there helping, 10 very busy days with over 8500 scouts and at least 10,000 people on site.

Well good news for all:
This Forum will be open all hours over the Christmas and New Year celebration periods.
There typically won't be any staff on daily duty as the process will be 'serve yourself' - as is normal.
Here's hoping that you have a very enjoyable Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

P.S. New members registering will have to wait for manual activation - which could be within an hour or could take two days. Keep an eye on the Forum and your email to see when it happens.
