2021 John Moyle Field Day - 20&21 March - VK4ADC - 28-01-2021

WIA John Moyle Field Day 2021 :  March from UTC 0100 on Saturday 20  to 0059 Sunday 21nd.

Aim Of The Contest

The aim is to encourage and provide familiarisation with portable and field operation, and provide training for emergency situations. The rules are therefore specifically designed and focussed to encourage field operations.

Contest History

The contest is run each year in memory of the late John Moyle who was a long term editor of the Wireless Weekly, (later Radio & Hobbies - later Radio Television & Hobbies) from 1947 until his untimely death in 1960.

He served in the RAAF with distinction and was responsible for a number of innovative solutions to keeping radio and radar equipment working under difficult wartime and working conditions.

The WIA decided that a suitable long term memorial to John Moyle would be a Field Day with a focus on portable or field operation. The contest has been conducted annually ever since.

The rules of the contest have gradually changed over time and are still revised regularly.
The contest is still for portable or field operators, though Home stations can of course take part using a different scoring system.

Though Multiple Operators and club stations are actively encouraged to take part in the contest they are not competing against the single operator stations and in effect there are two separate contests run at the same time. Hence single operator stations take part in their own contest against other single operators.

Contest Rules

The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations. All other stations are welcome to participate, but can only claim points for contacts with VK, ZL and P2 stations. All VK, ZL and P2 stations can claim points for all contacts, with any station in the world, as long as valid serial numbers are exchanged.

The contest rules ensure more logs are submitted, by requiring that if any station works the same station a total of more than 10 times on any band or on any mode then the logs from both station should be submitted to verify those contacts.

Single operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 6 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b Phone, CW, Digital or All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.

Multi-operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b Phone, CW, Digital, or All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.

Home entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF):
a 24 or 6 hour;
b Phone, All modes;
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands.

Multi operator stations are not permitted in the Home Category.

If any Station works the same station more than 10 times in total using any band and, or using any mode, they should submit their own log to verify those contacts for the other station.

RE: 2021 John Moyle Field Day - 20&21 March - VK4ADC - 21-02-2021

Reminder time for JMFD 2021.

It is only a few weeks away now so a helpful reminder to start your planning and organising of gear needed : radios, antennas, cabling, power sources.... and most importantly, portable QTHs.

WIA John Moyle Field Day 2021 :  March from UTC 0100 on Saturday 20  to 0059 Sunday 21nd.

At this stage, it looks like the following version of VKCL applies : VKCL Version 4.13.1 of 15th December 2020

Read the Rules beforehand..  https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/johnmoyle/

Bump - just over a week away. . . . .

RE: 2021 John Moyle Field Day - 20&21 March - VK4ADC - 18-03-2021

Bump -  this weekend !

I have my doubts that there will be many stations setting up for portable given the recent rain activity in some parts of AUS, and the forecast for the next few days, but you never know !!

Latest release of VKCL : VKCL Version 4.14, 1st March 2021

RE: 2021 John Moyle Field Day - 20&21 March - VK2CSW - 19-03-2021

And the forecast for here is worsening.

120-150mm overnight into tomorrow.

100mm overnight last night.

The ground is saturated and the runoff is starting to cause issues.

I hope it dries out for some and they can get out.

RE: 2021 John Moyle Field Day - 20&21 March - VK4ADC - 22-03-2021

The JMMFD for 2021 is over but there is one last step : submit your log. VKCL makes that easy.

My experience wasn't great Sat arvo, few stations around on 40M, none on 20M, and thunderstorms brewing. My 2M/70CM radio decided to die on Sat morning so no VHF/UHF either, not that there is usually much activity on those bands during JMMFD. I also found that I had a local internal noise issue causing aggravation when trying to copy weaker signals on HF : tracked down today to a USB/serial interface generating broadband noise. The USB lead wound through a toroid a few times plus some bypass capacitors fitted on the 5V rail in the device has quietened that down to near imperceptable. Funnily, I hadn't noticed the effect beforehand so maybe it was related to a USB hub change I made recently.

I made just 11 QSOs on 40M then gave it away and then sat back in the recliner watching Foxtel's Supercars coverage from Sandown. Less agro, so a more enjoyable balance of the afternoon.

My log is IN, and received an email back from VK4AE to confirm it. If nothing else it will help others confirm their QSOs.

Is your log in yet ?

Closing date is 12th April for electronic logs, 8th April for the paper variety, details in the rules at  https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/johnmoyle/documents/John%20Moyle%20Field%20Day%202021%20Rules.pdf
