Icom IC-756 screen replacement - VK4RW - 02-11-2016

My IC-756 (non PRO) has developed the dreaded blue screen syndrome.

Has anyone had to replace their screen recently? I have trawled the internet with very limited success, until today. There is an interesting discussion on QRZ forums where a number of amateurs are using graphic displays from Winstar and New Haven. These displays while not a direct drop in replacement, seem to be providing the answer to a problem that has been going on from when these sets were near new.

The QRZ topic can be found here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/ic-756-non-pro-display-update-project.494437/">https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?thread ... ct.494437/</a><!-- m -->

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has completed the screen replacement using one of these displays.

Doug

Thanks for the reply.

I have sent an email to Crest, just waiting on a reply. Did see the forum thread you linked, my translation was very loose English, but enough to make sense of it.

Re: Icom IC-756 screen replacement - VK4RW - 13-11-2016

Thanks for the link.

I did order the version without the on-board controller, same as that being used by other amateurs who have successfully replaced their screens. Some U.S. amateurs have used a model made by New Haven with success.

I purposely ordered the version without the controller, as I am not across the black magic of LCD graphic displays and associated dark arts. :?

I know this is a long shot but....

I am in the process on changing the screen in my IC-756, and I need to replace 2 flat flexible cables being -

The cable from the sub logic board to the main unit, and the flexible cable from the main board to the display unit. Both have suspect connection pads.
Does anyone know of the availability of these cables, or know someone who may be dismantling IC756?

Cheers

RE: Icom IC-756 screen replacement - VK4RW - 16-07-2017

Hello all

Well the screen replacement went....ok.

While reassembling the unit I have had an 'oh sh!t' moment.  It appears I have taken out the CMOS graphic controller chip. Angry

The screen hhas the blue background raster, with a white square (as is normal), but no other information.

Are there any kind hearted folk out there that maybe able to assist in replacing the 100 pin SMD chip? Please.

I can obtain another chip (no thanks to Icom), but removing and resoldering this chip is way above my capabilities.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Contact can be made through the forum or at 'my callsign'@wia.org.au

Thanks

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooops ! (That means a big oops  Big Grin )
Power on while partially reassembling ??

Most of the people with solder rework stations may be able to help, me also if you can't find someone closer, though I haven't done up around the 100 pin variety. (and I should have mentioned: steady hands...)

I had almost forgotten that I started this thread.

So here is the update in a nutshell.

Radio is back in the shack and working like a new one!

Had the chip replaced by a company in Bowen Hills who repair studio and broadcast equipment.

Screen replaced after some mucking around, and works perfectly.

One happy camper Big Grin .

Case closed.
