2EFM-6CPU 144 MHz Christmas Eve Special!
#1
VK2EFM gets its done on 144 MHz to VK6CPU/P Christmas Eve at 3051 km.

On the 24.12.22 at 0524z a 144 MHz WSPR signal was decoded at VK6CPU/p remote site at Albany.
Initially thought probably an incorrectly reported spot, but upon further investigation it appears this path was real, although quite extraordinary considering the circumstances at the time.
The crazy part about it was that the sporadic E propagation was in decline from quite a good high MUF period of a few hours with max reported MUF up to 107.7 MHz and covering a good deal of southern Australia.
Coincidentally, at the same time there was also tropo propagation across the Bight between VK5AKK and VK6CPU/p and VK6NI around 1900 km.
To make working out what had happened even harder, VK2EFM had transmitted on both 6m and 2m WSPR at the same time on that period as was demonstrated by the local reports.
One unknown in the mix is how did the signal get across? double hop sporadic E, Chordal hop Es, or a combination of single hop Es and then into the established Tropo Ducting already in the Bight at the time?
You will notice on the map that the EFM to CPU path lines up pretty much exactly on the same line as the AKK to CPU tropo path, which is interesting to note into the theory that the path may have been a single E into Tropo. But having said that, one would think if this were the case that VK6NI would have decoded also, but this did not happen.
Also of note is that there was NO reception of any 6m WSPR signal from VK2EFM on Es at 0524z by anyone in VK5 or VK6. The max 6m WSPR decode on that transmission was by VK2KRR at 440 km, probably backscatter.
You can also see the last 6m reception of EFM in VK5 was 12 mins prior to 0524z and the last 6m EFM to VK6 was 14 mins prior and weak at -26dB.
Well done to Nigel and Allan.
