JOTA 2017 - 60th Jamboree On The Air

From WIA News for 6th May 2017 comes a timely reminder that JOTA will again be upon us before we realise it :

Date this year is 20 to 22 October 2017.

The theme for JOTA-JOTI 2017 is “60 Years Connecting Scouts” i.e. this year is the 60th JOTA.

Considering participating in Jamboree On The Air for the first time and don’t know where to start, or a previous poor experience leaves you reluctant to become involved again?

Hello, I am Paul VK2GX and in this short news item I would like to offer a few hints and tips, to help in achieving a successful JOTA experience for everyone.

Tip 1 – setting up and operating a JOTA station can be a big commitment for one person. Considering seeking assistance from other local operators or radio club.

Tip 2 – make contact with guide and scout leaders as early as possible, to allow plenty of time to plan and organise a successful JOTA activity. Don’t be discouraged if a previous approach to leaders have been declined, as circumstances may have changed.

Tip 3 – as with most relationships, guide and scout leaders are no different. Don’t be discouraged if your offer of a JOTA station is not accepted at the first approach. Try to keep things simple and avoid using too much technical jargon.

Tip 4 – Jamboree On The Air should be a joint venture between guides, scouts and amateur radio. The leader’s role is to organise the JOTA activity and supervise the youth members. The radio operator’s role is to set up and operate an amateur radio station, establish and maintain contacts with other JOTA stations.

Tip 5 – Try to establish the numbers of youth members that will be attending during JOTA, as this will determine the resources you will need for the JOTA station.

JOTA and JOTI is next month

 Over a million Scouts and Girl Guides in 150 plus countries are getting ready for the 60th Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and the 21st Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI).

 National Coordinator JOTA/JOTI for Scouts Australia, Brett Nicholas VK2BNN, writes in the September edition of Amateur Radio magazine about the event’s  history, its purpose, and how to be involved. The article is recommended reading particularly for those who can get involved in this major worldwide event that occurs on the third weekend of October.

 One such opportunity comes from the Northern Region Scouts, Echuca Airport, on Sunday October 22. Scouts Air Activities Victoria Leader, Paul McLennan VK3HGZ needs radio amateurs to setup up a station at the airfield to support this event and JOTA .  If you are able to assist please contact Paul VK3HGZ  ( state.airactivities ( at ) vicscouts.asn.au or on 0419 872 097 )

 Will you be operating a Jamboree On The Air radio station, either solo or perhaps as part of a local radio club team. Maybe your son or daughter is a youth member and you will be setting up a radio station for their local guide or scout group?  Or are you just considering participating in JOTA for the first time? 

 Whatever your situation, now is the time to review your Working With Children Check status.  Is your working with children check still current?

 A simple check of the expiry date will confirm if your WWCC is still current.  If you do not currently have a working with children check, my recommendation would be to apply as soon as possible, even if you are not yet committed to participating in JOTA this year. Working with children checks are processed by the relevant state or territory government department responsible for child  safety.  In addition, before you can participate in JOTA each year, your working with children check may require verification. In New South Wales, verification is processed by the working with children team at Scouts NSW head office, who will provide clearance for you to attend the JOTA activity.

 The procedure may be different in other Australian states and territories.  For more information about JOTA and working with children checks, you can visit the Jamboree On The Air Australia web site, www.jota.sgars.org which has links to both the relevant working with children department and guide or scout organisations in your state or territory. 

 I would like to encourage everyone to make the 60th JOTA a year to remember for guides and scouts around Australia.

Hi my name is Brett Nicholas VK2BNN and I have been recently appointed as the Scouts Australia National co-ordinator for Jamboree On The Air also known as JOTA.

 My name is Lorraine O’Hare VK2FICQ and I am the Girl Guides Australia National JOTA-JOTI Co-ordinator.
 We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Amateurs who have assisted with JOTA in the past and encourage both individuals and clubs to get involved with this year’s event.

 This year JOTA will be held on the weekend of the 20th to the 22nd of October.

 This year is a very special year. We are celebrating the 60th anniversary since Les Mitchell G3BHK (SK), Len Jarrett VE3MYF and their radio-scouting friends organised the first event in 1958. Who could have imagined that there will be well over one million Girl Guides and Scouts spread over more than 150 countries participating 60 years later.

 JOTA is fast approaching and it’s time to start putting plans together and get moving with this year’s event.  If you haven’t participated before then the 60th anniversary is a great year to give it a go.
