Aim Of The Contest

The aim is to encourage and provide familiarisation with portable and field operation, and provide training for emergency situations. The rules are therefore specifically designed and focussed to encourage field operations. 

The next Field Day will be held over the weekend of the 17th-18th March 2018 and will run from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 on the Sunday. 

{ The contest rules will remained modified to ensure more logs are submitted, by requiring that if any station works the same station a total of more than 10 times on any band or on any mode then the logs from both station should be submitted to verify those contacts. }

Contest History

The contest is run each year in memory of the late John Moyle who was a long term editor of the Wireless Weekly, (later Radio & Hobbies - later Radio Television & Hobbies) from 1947 until his untimely death in 1960. He served in the RAAF with distinction and was responsible for a number of innovative solutions to keeping radio and radar equipment working under difficult wartime and working conditions. The WIA decided that a suitable long term memorial to John Moyle would be a Field Day with a focus on portable or field operation. The contest has been conducted annually ever since. 

The rules of the contest have gradually changed over time and are still revised regularly. 

The contest is still for portable or field operators, though Home stations can of course take part using a different scoring system. 

Though Multiple Operators and club stations are actively encouraged to take part in the contest they are not competing against the single operator stations and in effect there are two separate contests run at the same time. Hence single operator stations take part in their own contest against other single operators. 

Contest Rules

The contest is open to all VK, ZL and P2 stations. All other stations are welcome to participate, but can only claim points for contacts with VK, ZL and P2 stations. All VK, ZL and P2 stations can claim points for all contacts, with any station in the world, as long as valid serial numbers are exchanged. 00 

Single operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 6 hour, phone, VHF/UHF): 
a 24 or 6 hour; 
b Phone, CW, Digital or All modes; 
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands. 

Multi-operator portable entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF): 
a 24 or 6 hour; 
b Phone, CW, Digital, or All modes; 
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands. 

Home entries shall consist of ONE choice from each of the following (e.g. 24 hour, phone, VHF/UHF): 
a 24 or 6 hour; 
b All modes; 
c HF, VHF/UHF or All Bands. 

Multi operator stations are not permitted in the Home Category. 

If any Station works the same station more than 10 times on any band, or using any mode, they should submit their own log to verify those contacts for the other station.

John Moyle Memorial Field Day

 Good Morning, This Denis VK4AE, WIA coordinator for the John Moyle Memorial Field Day 2018. This year the contest will occur over the weekend of Saturday the 17th to Sunday 18th March, 2018, the duration of the contest will be from UTC 0100 Saturday to 0059 on Sunday. The aim of the field day contest is to encourage familiarisation with portable operation and to provide training for operations in emergency situations.

 During the contest the field (portable) stations appreciate the support from home stations. However, in order to make the whole event a lot fairer, those field (portable) stations actually take part in effectively a separate event to home stations.  In this way home stations are not given an unfair advantage, when compared the portable stations that do not have the advantages of a permanent antenna installation, mains power and the comfort of operating from their own home QTH. 

 Home stations are single operator stations and Club Stations operating from their club premises are not operating portable.  Last year we had a number of club stations wanting to claim portable operation from the clubrooms as it was likely to be raining during the contest and they were not keen to actually operate portable.  In addition, there were club stations who felt that operating in the local caravan park using mains power was also portable operation.  Of course, none of these club stations were operated according to the rules or to the spirit of the contest.

 No matter how you plan to take part in the contest, after the activity is all over and the radio equipment has been packed away, there is one task that must be completed by all stations.  They must submit their log for the contest for the validation of those contacts for the other stations.

 There is sufficient time allowed after the contest to actually complete and submit their log to the WIA, as paper logs will be accepted as long as they are post marked 18th April and electronic logs up until midnight 25th April 2018.  So there are not many excuses today for not sending in your as it can be kept electronically while the contest is under way using one of the many logging programs such as VK Contest Log by our own Mike VK3AVV.  Then you simply have to submit the print file from this program to me via one of the e-mail addresses shown on the contest page on the WIA website.

 Of course by submitting your log you automatically enter the contest and you never know you might even get a certificate?

 Now is the time to carry on with your planning for the field day as there is only one week to go before the event.  There is still time to make sure that everything is in order and operating and all of the little bits and pieces that are needed to put your station onto the airwaves are all in the desired place.

 Make sure that the location you had chosen is still accessible after the summer onslaught from flood and bushfire and the roads into the place have not been closed  in the interests of public safety  and that the trees that were so useful for string aerials and tent ropes in the past are still in good condition and safe to be around.

Greetings to all!
Whereas I have enjoyed operating in the JMMFD in a portable capacity over many years (weather permitting!), this year I am forced by personal circumstances to have to only give out a few numbers from my home in the not-radio-quiet inner suburbs of Brisbane.
I wish all portable participants well for the 2018 event - I'll be thinking of you!

Ditto for me. I (currently) plan to operate from the home QTH on Saturday afternoon, probably either just HF - or HF/6/2/70, so will give out some numbers to the multitudes in VK, ZL and P29. No microwave planned i.e. 23cm & up.

My original intention (some weeks ago) was to go portable but the recent weather in SEQ has made that virtually impossible as far as I am concerned, particularly given that the vehicle would quickly bog in mud at the anticipated location. I went there for a previous JMMFD and had rain whilst there - and then had traction problems when leaving due to the slimey clay mud/mush. Not happening there, and the number of viable locations for VHF/UHF is rapidly declining, so alternatives aren't easy either.

I'll just see what the day brings..

Unfortunately for VK3, the Country Fire Authority has declared a Total Fire Ban for the whole of Saturday.    This has put paid to our plans to operate from the Wombat State Forest, as the CFA advice has always been to leave early from a State Forest on a TFB day.  We have previous experience in the area with potential fires and the speed at which they can move in that area, and there has been virtually no rain since mid January when we were last there.     So VK3ER/p will not be participating in the JMFD this year for the first time in many, many years.

We suspect other potential FD operators will have similar apprehensions.

Well the JMFD for 2018 is almost complete, actually complete if you have submitted your log.....  Note particularly section 14..


From the 2018 JMMFD rules document :

Log Submission 
12. For each contact: UTC time, frequency, station worked, RST/serial numbers sent/received and claimed score. (VHF and above location of other station and distance showing the Lat/Long or Maidenhead Locator to 6 figures for the station worked.) 

13. All logs must be accompanied by a summary sheet showing: call sign, name, mailing address, section entered, number of contacts, claimed score, location of the station during the contest, and equipment used, and a signed declaration stating "I hereby declare that this station was operated in accordance with the rules and spirit of the contest and that the contest manager's decision will be accepted as final". For multi-operator stations, the FULL names and all call signs (legible) of all operators must be listed. 

14. The Email address for this year’s JMMFD contest should be setup a few days before the contest, and I would suggest to those who will be sending in your Logs electronically, to send in a test email with the words “TEST JMMFD 2018”, in subject the line and also set the “READ REQUEST RECEIPT flag (if it is available on your e-mail system.). Your call sign can then be added into the database for this year’s contest. When actually submitting your log for the contest, if you do not receive an e-mail acknowledging receipt of your log, then the log has not been received. 

15. Paper logs may be posted to "John Moyle Contest Manager, 27 Laguna Ave, Kirwan 4817 QLD". Alternatively, logs may be e-mailed jmfd2018@wia.org.au, vk4ae@wia.org.au, or snail mailed via the WIA Contest Manager, JMMFD, P.O. Box 2042 Bayswater, VIC 3153. Club stations must forward in the first instance an electronic version of their log. Club Stations who submit only a paper log will have that log returned as unreadable, due to the very large amount of work involved in entering and checking large paper logs. 

16. The following formats are acceptable: Microsoft Excel or Word, ASCII text or the print log output file from electronic log programs such as VK Contest Log (VKCL). Logs sent by disc or e-mail must include a summary sheet and declaration, but the operator’s full name (legible) is acceptable in lieu of a signature. 

17. Because of the altered publishing lead time of AR Magazine Logs must be postmarked no later than 18th April 2018, and as the post is now so slow and unreliable, logs despatched on the last day might not arrive in time. Electronic versions of the log will be received until midnight 25th April 2018. Any logs received after this date will be returned as ineligible. 

18. If any station works the same station multiple times on any band or on any mode, both stations should each enter a log to verify those contacts. This rule was introduced to overcome a problem experienced in previous contests where a portable station worked a significant number of home stations, but those home stations did not enter a log, so there were a very large number of unverifiable contacts.
