3.4GHz Microwave activity day |

Back on August 22nd Gavin VK3HY suggested a 3.4GHz activity day for the 28th of August. Even with the short notice a number of people took advantage of the opportunity and got their gear out to play radio. Here is my belated report of the day.
It was very pleasing to hear everyone on air and great to hear that once again our ZL friends joined in the activity. I along with Chris VK3ACG and Garry VK3VLA set up at Mt Anakie where we heard and worked the following stations;
Mt Dandenong: Gavin VK3HY, Rob VK3MQ
Mt Buninyong: Ian VK3AXH, Anthony VK3CAP (First microwave adventure),
Ian VK3IDL, Bob VK3BNC
Barrabool Hills: Chas VK3PY
Geelong: Cal VK3ZPK
Kinglake area: Bernard VK3AV
Camberwell: Alan VK3XPD
Mt Ridley, Craigeiburn: Damian VK3KQ: Ralph VK3LL
Mt Tassie: Ralph VK3WRE
Loch: Peter VK3APW
In ZL, Brian ZL1AVZ, Harry ZL1BK, Simon ZL1SWW and Stephen ZL1TPH all got on the air.. Ralph ZL1TBG was to >be on but never heard.
We heard faint traces of Matt VK3PP's keyer from Hamilton but he could not hear us. We missed Craig VK3KG who had some issues with his receiver. By all accounts Craig put a strong signal into Melbourne. We also took 2.4GHz with us specifically to work Bernard VK3AV on his new transverter and to allow Garry VK3VLA to operate microwaves under his recently acquired standard call. On 2.4GHz all three of us worked VK3APW, VK3AV and VK3HY.
I suggest the next event (whenever that may be) should be 2.4GHz as it allows the standard call operators to join in the fun. For the record, standard call operators are permitted to work on 1.2GHz, 2.4GHz and 5.7GHz - certainly enough bands to keep them busy on field days.
Thanks to Gavin, Rob and Ian who got the ball rolling on another fun microwave activity day.

Radio Amateurs Old Timers Club Australia Inc
http://www.raotc.org.au/
The Radio Amateurs Old timers Club of Australia (RAOTC) is eager to attract new members, particularly younger members, to help to keep the spirit of Amateur Radio alive, revitalise the club and ensure its continued existence. We believe that there is a place for a club like ours which complements existing amateur radio clubs and other amateur organisations.
Many amateurs know very little about the RAOTC. Here are some ideas and information about the RAOTC that may be worth considering to someone who has been qualified to hold an Amateur Licence for ten or more years.
To many, an ‘old timer’ portrays the wrong image. As you know, an ‘old timer’ does not have to be a person of mature years and a good explanation of this appears on the RAOTC web page at http://www.raotc.org.au. In fact, the first Foundation Licence holders are now eligible for membership of the RAOTC!
The RAOTC is a National club with a membership of around 470 amateurs spread right around Australia, stronger in some States than in others. It does not hold regular meetings or other activities as do other radio clubs, so no regular commitment of time is necessary. The RAOTC holds two luncheons per year in Melbourne, a monthly luncheon in Perth and an annual luncheon in Adelaide. Members have the opportunity to meet up with friends over a meal and a drink. It would be good if membership would grow sufficiently in other states so they could also enjoy meeting at similar get-togethers.
The RAOTC can assist members and their families, and advise them what to do with radio equipment, books and components belonging to radio amateurs who are no longer on the air for various reasons.
If you would like to join the RAOTC, there is an application form for membership available as a PDF and, if you decide to join before 1st January 2017, the $5.00 joining fee will be waived.
(This info was extracted from an invitation I recently received to join RAOTC, but there was more than could be posted if someone asks.)

Last Tuesday I tripped over a group (mostly in the western suburbs of Melbourne) on 144.310 SSB. They all operate with vertical antennas so anyone with an all mode rig can have a go with SSB and make some contacts. The net apparently starts around 7.30 pm on Tuesday. There is also a 70cm version on Monday evenings 432.310 at 7.30pm.
The discussion is very casual and I found it quite enjoyable. If you have a 2m or 70cm allmode box and a vertical antenna and live in Melbourne or the surrounds, I am sure you will be made welcome.

Its on again, the Microwave show and tell at the SCARC club at Seaford Meadows. The Seaford Meadows Scout facility on Railway Road is the venue, on Thursday 15th September, from 7.30pm. Looking forward to seeing some of the new gear, and developments from last year.
